thoughts on trainers

I know how everyone feels about trainers vs. live blades but hear me out. Live blades are a little more dangerous to flip, but to me that makes the feeling of perfecting a new trick that much more gratifying. I don't get to practice as much as I'd like and the main reason is my work hours. I can't flip a bali at work because I work at other peoples homes and a live blade would more than likely freak out the clients ( and my boss) so I figured I'd get a trainer to flip on my breaks and at lunch. Not only did getting the trainer give me a few more minutes a day to practice, but I think it may have helped speed up my learning curve a little.

I bought a 40tr expecting it to feel and weigh the same as my 42. Boy was I wrong. The 40tr seems to be a little heavier, the handles feel larger and more square and it's clunkier/awkward feeling to flip. I almost felt like my learning took a step back when I first flipped it at work. I was trying to show my coworkers what I could do but just wasn't nailing the tricks I could with my 42 at home  . I had a hectic couple of weeks where I had no time at home and the only practice I was getting was with my trainer at work. I eventually was pulling off the same moves as I would've with the live blade. Finally things slowed down and I could flip my 42 again, and what a difference! That thing felt like it was flying through my fingers. My speed had picked up a little and I wasn't dropping it half as much as before. I think flipping a clunkier, more awkward feeling bali helped me perfect my finger movements a little more. The one big downside is I tended to get too relaxed and was gripping the wrong handle every so often. The last thing I want to do is develop bad habits and fuck up my fingers when I pick up the real thing. Now I make sure to put in more time with my 40 than the 42, and I only learn new stuff with the live blade. It's harder to break a bad habit than to not start one in the first place.

So I won't ever completely knock trainers, without one I'd get way less practice time than I do, but I think a live blade is necessary for learning to flip properly. If you're flipping and fuck up all day long without suffering the consequences, it takes away your best learning tool: pain. Nothing will make you want to figure out what you're doing wrong more than a bloody hand. A little cut now and again makes you stay more focused on what your doing , and it just looks way cooler with a live blade.

balisong without a live blade Is like beer without alcohol :D

I do tape my blade sometimes, but only when I try to do things like loosey's aerials; and dont mind people practising with trainers.

people shouldn't show off with their trainer though

I don't think anyone would appreciate a trick performed with a trainer in the arena

training tool: yes(the name is pretty clear  )

show off tool: no

Re: thoughts on trainers

I have never taped my blade or used a trainer.

I don't rate that...

I prefer to just flip naturally, dangerous or not dangerous.

Re: thoughts on trainers

like I said before, cuts make you learn. I'm not running away from cuts, just the law. If Canadian laws weren't so damn anal about it, I'd probably EDC a bali. I flip my 42 every chance I get. As it stands the only thing I can flip when not hiding in my house is a trainer. I'll take 20 mins of flipping a fake bali over 0 min with a real one anyday.

Re: thoughts on trainers

Yeah, if you're living in Canada, I guess it's pretty understandable. You're lucky to even have a live blade at all.

I will occasionally tape the blade of newly acquired knives because I have no idea how they'll behave when I try to flip them. It comes off in less than a week, because at that point, I'll have a feel for where the edge is and where it's going. The only risk then is a minor nick when my fingers fumble a bit and don't get out of the way in time.

Actually, the only incidents I've had lately are when the the handle slips out of my fingers mid-twirl and the blade comes flying at my chest.

Re: thoughts on trainers

I dunno, i like the trainer only because i can take it out with me, but i like to flip with real blades. I've actually had the blade dropped on my foot, near the ankle, and it left a pretty good mark. i think i was trying to do some kind of aerial and i dropped the knife. very very ... uncool of me.

Re: thoughts on trainers

As I'm sure most people know...My BM that is on order is a trainer. For the following reasons...
A-Ken made me. I'm really klutzy and he felt safer with me getting the trainer.
2-At the time that I was not aware of the arena. I was only going to learn tricks for my own benifit. So at that point it didn't matter.

Now that I'm here I really want a 42. I still want my trainer. Its much safer to learn with...and Donut is right less scary when you are at work. BUT I have held the 42 in my hand and love it.

I think there a nice compliment to each other. Cutlerlover used to have both and would learn a trick on the trainer and then do it on the 42 and pretend it was the trainer.

There still is a cool factor when showing off to your friends but it does increase when there is a real blade that could really cut you.
Mastering the art of flipping...one trick at a time...with a touch of randomness.

Re: thoughts on trainers

Personally, I won't flip with a trainer. It just doesn't feel genuine to me, ya know?

Flipping with a trainer is almost like playing paintball with balls that don't hurt you when you get hit. Not fun. Getting cut if half the fun IMO. Meh. I dunno...

I just really don't have any desire to spend any money on a trainer. ESP one that costs as much as a real knife....

Chassy wants me to get a trainer for the times when I'm tryin to learn a new trick or something. But as of now, I'm tryin to get down some aerials for my super hero video. Live blade of course.... ;)

doing nerf gun wars are just as exciting as airsoft/paintball guns...
;)
but, 1, airsoft trumps paintball guns, second, i get what you're saying, but nerf guns are fun. :)
