If your budget is strictly right around the hundred dollar mark I would definitely get a kimura.. It's a great knife for the price, and blows any CCCs I've handled right out of the water.

Go with the 51. It's a lot lighter, easier on your hands, the G10 kind of offers a nice grip. Both knives have D2 tool steel blades. The edge retention is great, it holds. It's just harder to sharpen since it's a hard steel. If you're in Cali, you're going to want to keep either blade (as well as your Kimura) oiled. WD-40 is fine, though a mineral or gun oil would be better. If it happens to rust, a bit of WD-40 and some steel wool will take it right off. But watch out for the edge, steel wool will kill it. The 51 also has titanium liners, and a spring latch. Longer handles as well, which make for easier manipulations. It's a better flipper. The 62 has stainless steel handles that are shorter than any other full-sized bali I've ever seen, which make it both heavy, and a clumsy flipper. The 62 is 6.39 ounces. Heavier than your Kimura. It also has a t-latch. You may like that or you may not. The 51 is the better flipper, though. Plus, it's only $270 as opposed to $350 for the 62.

So i wont be getting an expensive balisong anytime soon.. But if i were to get a trainer, would i be able to legally carry it in California at the age of 14?

My guess is they would confiscate it even though its a trainer and not a live blade, even I leave my knives at home when I go to cali not worth the risk of getting arrested or the near definite loss of that much money. Nope best to leave toys at home you could look into a Spyderco Baliyo no laws surrounding pens.

Dude.. Where are you buying your knives? A brand new 51 is around 180-190, and a brand new 62 is about 220 on bladehq.. Shop around before you buy, don't buy direct from the Benchmade site.. You will always find them cheaper on a retailer site.

^ + 1 plus go with the 51 it is lightweight and easy to use and more forgiving when you mess up on a trick.

Its actually about 270 in BladeHQ or BladeOPs. I think you are talking about the secondary market.

Nope.. I think I'm Talking brand new from BladeHQ.. You have to have an account and login to see the actual price, because Benchmade won't let them advertise the price that low. $ 222.99 for the 62, just checked it out to make sure. That's what I paid for mine as well. The 51 did come up a little. It's priced $ 189.95 right now, and it was around $ 170 when I got mine. Still a far cry from $ 270, and $ 350.

Edit: Not sure about BladeOPs.. it may be 270 there. I know when I bought mine, I looked around and BladeHQ was by far the cheapest. I think BladeOPs was asking somewhere around 270 for it.

have many knives in my collection but yet to have any flipper/butterfly knives... I'm looking at the Kimura V or Vii and the Bear Ops B400 "i'd rather the 400 with aluminum handles vs b200 with g-10" I usually would just go benchmade and never look back but being a first knife of this type I'm not looking to drop $200+

Don't buy the 62 overpriced and heavy, if you buy a B400 expect to be a little disappointed their price outweighs their quality slightly(i would say $50 would have been perfect for it), and the kimura is a great knife but it is only slightly lighter than the 62 but if you like a heavy bali go for it its price reflects its quality perfectly.

I'm liking the blade design on the Kimura V but it also looks like it could make flipping more difficult vs the standard clip point style blades like on the VII

Definetly the 51 although I imagine rollovers could be easier on the 62
