Tips & Secrets

When I picked up my first balisong, from the local highway-side flea market, I thought nothing of it. I like knives and this particular bali had a scorpion on the handles. My first thoughts were that of any n00b, "Fuckin' sweet!!" The next day, I was bored at work and decided to type in "butterfly knife" at the YouTube home page. What I found was nothing that I had anticiipated to see. People were actually doing TRICKS with these things...without cutting themselves at that. Hell, right then and there is when I knew exactly what my new hobby was going to be. But how in the hell was I going to figure out how to do that shit???

For the next few weeks, I searched and searched for balisong help sites. Anything with an explanation for anything related to my balisong.

Balisong Manipulators are pretty stingy people from the looks of it. There was only one site that had any useful information on it without having to ask for it. http://www.balisongxtreme.com Wow! What a great site that was. It had explanation for anything and everything balisong.

Blade Forums was pretty nice, but it seemed there were more collectors hanging around there than anything.
One day, a select few group of people wanted a way to help the balisong community expand by means of competition. Greatest idea ever, if you ask me.

What I'm getting at is...I've learned more from this site than I have from ANYWHERE! I want to keep it that way. It seems, now, that the balisong community is rapidly picking up speed, for some odd reason. We need to keep these folks around. We need to keep each other around. I want to start a list here of tips & secrets. Don't keep anything to yourself. Tell us everything you know.

I'm willing to bet good money that half the people here know something no one else does. Let's see how far we can take thsi thing guys...

Tip: If my fingers are already loosened up from just starting to flip for the first time in a day, but still want to practice, there's something I like to do. Find some lotion(we all have some for something or other....), and put a generous amount in your hand. Try flipping. MFer will probably fly outta your hands first time you try this. Learn how to control it when your hands are slippery. It will do wonders for your overall control and fluidity. Take it from me.

TIP: When I think about how I'm going to do a trick, I don't think of the bali as being flipped and pushed with my fingers. I think of the bali being i constant "aerial motion"(I guess  ), and I'm simply just using my fingers to nudge the knife around in the air. Change the way you think about your knife every now and then and observe how drastically it can change your entire perspective on flipping.

TIP: chase the artform not the trick or the arena win...

TIP: get a friend interested in balisongs. Its nice to have someone face to face vs always looking at things on the internet.

Wow Stu....awesomeee thread !

Hmm, let's see...

TIP: Confidence and self-esteem are needed in flipping balisongs. I'm gonna talk in particular about aerials though. If you see something bad-ass done online eg. done by Loosey or Faulty (or maybe even me) and you're like "Holy shit ! I can't do that !" then I'm sorry to say that's just garbage. If it's been done before, you can do it too. Just takes determination and the will to bleed. Therefore, I want all you fuckers to go try out some guillotine and meatgrinders right now.

TIP: If you really want to be good at this, it takes a lot more dedication and time than you think. Flip ANY chance you get. If you're bored and watching TV or listening to music; flip. I used to practice anywhere between eight to ten hours daily. watch other videos on YouTube other than just bali videos for inspiration. Inspiration can be found EVERYWHERE!

TIP: Get sloppy with your tricks after you've MASTERED them. Do it beforehand, and it's counterproductive. If you get sloppy, your hands will do weird things and new tricks are magically born. Don't do tricks just as you see them. Try and variate. Start in the middle of the trick and let it go elsewhere. Hell, I used to see if I'd be able to perform certain tricks backwards. Keep your mind open.

TIP: dont think that because you bleed alot, the rest of us dont.
its been said by others before, "if you dont have any cuts on your hands, you've either mastered the art, or just picked up a balisong for the first time"

TIP : don't depreciate simple tricks cause combos are combinations of them. Trying to master the combos before mastering the simple tricks is like willing to learn what a wall is. Learn what a brick is before.

couldn't agree more with you; for example look at simple moves blasto sometimes does, they look wickedly fluid and very advanced, even tho they're simple(not talking about the wtf hows that possible video's from him)

TIP: When practicing aerials, the main key is keeping your eye constantly on your catching location. This requires a considerable amount of hand-eye coordination. I practice my aerials at work. I grab my pliers and just toss them around. I still get a lot of cuts from the pliers, but by the end of the eight hour day I just about have the trick down.

Also grow some fuzz on those kiwis. Just fucking try it. You will be surprised the results you get.

Couldn't have said it better/

If you don't have any fuzzies and/or aren't willing to grow any for the sake of bali flipping, quit now.
