this one cracks much louder and with less effort than my first. It's also a lot stiffer and a little longer ( that's what she said ) which helps things. you guys really should give this a go if you get the chance, it feels awesome when you get a good loud crack, and it's cool knowing I made it myself. If I were to buy something like this it would run me between $100-$200 USD

I usually buy from supplycaptain.com . They have all the colors, it's real mil-spec 550 cord, and you can get it in large spools of all the colors. There are a few other spots if you google, some with more variety of lengths than supplycaptain, but they don't have all the colors all the time. Ebay is also another good spot to find deals, but picking your colors isn't always an option.

Another thing that you really need for this is artificial sinew. It's used to bind the strands together at the butt of the whip and also for supporting the inner layer (you can see what I mean in that tutorial) . Ebay is awesome for this stuff. I paid 5 bucks for 20 yards from Tandy leather shops and it was enough for one whip ( I may have gone a little overboard ), I found 300 yards on ebay for just 8 bucks + shipping. Definitely a bargain.

finished another one. I tried messing around with a few patterns on this one, that's why there's a funny looking section in the middle. A few more and the quality should be good enough for me to sell them in good conscience.

9 feet including the 12" handle. If you count the fall and cracker at the end it's probably close to 11.5 feet

@ BenLankford-- it's not how I make them anymore, but here's a good tutorial to get you started.

patience is a must with these things. they take quite a while to do, and you only get better by making more and figuring things out for yourself as you go along.
