Dulling for a trainer

hey guys I got a cheap knife the other day that flips quite decently and I'd like to dull it for a trainer (my parents get extremely pissy when I have fun with just about anything sharp)
so my first question is, what's a good way to dull it effectively while still having it look quite nice?

and also since I'm in California, what are the laws concerning how dull a blade has to be for legality issues?
help for either one would be appreciated

Re: Dulling for a trainer

The simplest way would be to repeatedly cut something as hard, or harder than the blade itself. If you have any hard ceramics available, or even another knife you don't care to keep sharp, rub them against each other in a slow fashion (think of how most ignorant kids your age attempt to "sharpen" their parents cheapo kitchen knives with a honing rod). If you're clueless as to what I'm referring to, Google it. Also, this question could very well have been answered via the same process.

haha you have no idea how much I agree with your comment about how ignorant kids my age are (thankfully I'm not one of them)
and thanks for that, I kind of assumed but it's always better to be safe than sorry

also what are your ideas regarding the legality issue?
it doesn't really matter whether you know or not I'd just like to get your idea

I use coarse sandpaper. 100 grit.

The point is still sharp so it needs to be treated as well. Rubbing it onto the sidewalk is the same but less refined. Hahaha!

I Wear eye protection and gloves.

Re: Dulling for a trainer

Completely forgot about the legality issue you brought up-

As far as I'm aware (which is pretty far), there are virtually zero legality issues in any of the 50 states regarding carrying a Balisong trainer, or knife with an unsharpened blade. Bottle-fly's, general trainers, and even the Baliyo follow this jurisdiction and are able to be sold in retail outlets due to such ruling. You shouldn't have any problems carrying the knife around, be it concealed or otherwise, but the same logic applies to where you shouldn't go flashing it around in public. If a law officer ever questions you about it, kindly open it with both hands and explain that it is a trainer and is used for such purposes.

Also, forgot to mention this as well- CDR's sandpaper idea works rather well as well, but might grind the edge up too fine to the point of which it'll be very hard to sharpen by yourself when the time comes to do so. If you want a rather lengthy, but worthwhile approach to dull it (and haven't already done so), then take some old cardboard boxes or phone books and slice them up vigorously. Once again, it could take a while, but will effectively remove the edge from the knife.

You're welcome in advance for the grade A essay.

Re: Dulling for a trainer

Awesome job on that essay dude :TU:
I have two of the knives because I got one specifically for dulling so I don't much care what happens to it
I think I'll use some sandpaper to make it look slightly nicer
Thanks guys!

Re: Dulling for a trainer

Yea I know what ya mean about parents, I just put some tape on the blade until I got good at it. About the point, I only stuck myself if I was throwing it up in the air. Don't worry about looks until you start using it as an every day carrier. Then obviously take the tape off. :D
