Blade Care and Maintenance

My BM 51's blade has seen better days...

What I know: D2 steel isn't stainless steel and needs to be oiled to stop it from rusting or pitting

What I want to know: I have been using gun oil a couple times a week on the blade ever since the shine started
to fade on my blade. Should I be using something else? What can I do to polish the blade to get the shine back?

Thanks,
It looks like they have several different types, i assume you use the metal polish that comes in a tube like this:
