what are you skeptical of?
- Canadians: you may not like us, but we're too drunk to care

-the flipping arena: Deflating egos is what we do.

I've just heard some stories that if are true, I will not have much respect at all for him.

You kids a wack. Has anyone ever thought of reversing the IKBS system? Not drilling the holes for the balls to rest in the handle, but instaid the blade.

Yes, that's actually what I said in the first post of this thread.

Re: Channel style bearing system?

It would be difficult to assemble the knife with the races into the blade. It would also made disassembly rather difficult and it would be easy to lose the bearings.

Re: Channel style bearing system?

ya exactly, you would still have 4 sets of bearings, but you would have to assemble it two sets of bearings at a time instead or one at a time. I think it wouldn't be impossible, but it wouldn't be nearly as convenient as regular IKBS

I still stand my ground on caged bearings. It just seems simple...

Re: Channel style bearing system?

Here would have to be the size of the bearings...

That's something I've been thinking on. It might be possible to pre-assemble the bearings, then coat them in something like wax. You could then assemble the knife and slip the bearings in there. Then you (carefully) apply heat to melt the wax and use an air compressor to blast it out.

Re: Channel style bearing system?

Instead of wax, perhaps grease would be good enough?
Like in this website explaining IKBS, where the ball bearings are held in place just grease.
I think the biggest issue would be from inserting the tang/bearings into the handles pushing the bearings aside. The hole in the tang would give the bearings somewhere to go. I think a temporary plug would be helpful for insertion, something that could be removed before, or in the process of inserting the actual tang pin/screw.

Re: Channel style bearing system?

Still sounds like too much work, but plugging the holes for the pivot screws sounds simple enough. Just make sure the knife is cleaner than the virgin mary, use wax to plug the hole, push wax out with pivot.
